Michael Jackson – Man in the mirror
30 years ago, January 16, 1988, a fantastic song was released as a single. A sweet, yet very powerful song. One of those songs that… you hear them a thousand times, then you look at the video after such a long time, and suddenly you need to stop and think. He was the King of the 80s, with the capital K, Michael Jackson. The song is “Man in the mirror”, from the album “Bad”. Some say the title was about the physical changes of Michael, frankly speaking I think there’s much more than that. The video is outstanding, simple yet so emotional and impactful. After a world offended by wars, weapons, discrimination, famine, we can now build a new world with small but important steps, a worls of simple smiles, a new world. Then we see the images of Gandhi, Mother Teresa, references to USA for Africa and Bob Geldof, because music itself can and must do its part of the task.
Michael Jackson, the King, is completely apart, in this powerful video, he took a step back. We can see him in just one scene, hard to see him. Because the man in the mirror is not Michael Jackson, the man in the mirror is every single one of use who are looking at this video. This is, ultimately, the greatness of man Michael Jackson, despite all the troubles and the weirdness of his life. And maybe the 80s were not just a period of superficiality and glamour.
