Pet Shop Boys – Domino Dancing
“Domino Dancing” announced, in September 1988, the incoming of a new Pet Shop Boys’ album. Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe came from two album of incredible success. They really stood among the icons of the 80s. They really stood at the same level of Duran Duran and Spandau Ballet, just to talk about Great Britain. These albums are “Please” (that included “West End Girls“) and “Actually”, and we already talked about hits like “It’s a Sin”, “Rent”, “What Have I Done to Deserve This?” and “Heart“.
Just one year had passed since then, and in this period they also released another hit in the meantime, “Always on my mind”. Yet, in October 1988, Pet Shop Boys released an album which clearly had on open door to enter history for a lot of reasons.
“Introspective” was really a disruptive album, cutting off with the past. It contained only 6 tracks, all in remixed version. All very long tracks, over 6 minutes every song (it was so easy with the remixes). Actually it contained only two brand new songs. PSB in fact already released the other hits (maybe as B-sides). For example, PSB gave “I’m not scared” to Eighth Wonder, as we know.
And the cover! It is definitely an icon of the 80s, like other famous covers (“Seven and the ragged tiger” or “Like a Virgin” or “Born in the USA” for example). A very simple, colourful, unforgettable cover.
For all of these reasons, “Introspective” was ready to enter history… and it did! It still is one of the most beloved albums by PSB fans! And it is one of the two more successful PSB albums workdwide.
We said that PSB released “Always on my mind” one year before, and then included it in “Introspective”. So the real first single was “Domino Dancing”. PSB filmed the video in Puerto Rico, and they personally chose the actors, for a somehow latin atmosphere. The hit entered the charts, but missed the fantastic success of other previous songs.
Some say that Neil Tennant took this as the start of a declining period. If this is true, this shows once again the genius and talent of PSB!! Not only because after more than 30 years they are still masterfully performing in 80s revivals, but also because during all these years their production never stopped!

I thought that when we fought I was to blame
But now I know you play a different game
I've watched you dance with danger, still wanting more
