Pet Shop Boys – Left to my own devices
“Left to my own devices” marked another successful shot in Pet Shop Boys’ track of records. They released the song on November 14, 1988. A very short time after the album “Introspective” and after the first single “Domino Dancing“, they release this song with odd title and lyrics, and with irresistible dance sound.
Title and lyrics. Neil Tennant once told that the song is about a guy who lives doing exactly what he wants. From easist things like having tea, to complicated dreams like playing on a stage. Always with the greatest freedom. A lonely guy, of course.
This song had even greater success than the previous hit. Yet when I looked at the video I was thinking.. I couldn’t remember this video! And there is a reason! This video is quite dark, and MTV refused to broadcast it beacuse it seemd “obfuscated”. In fact the only lights are blue and red spots coming from the ceiling of the dark room where they filmed the video. But not even this denial could stop the success of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe’s talent!!!
I was faced with a choice at a difficult age
Would I write a book? Or should I take to the stage?
But in the back of my head I heard distant feet
Che Guevara and Debussy to a disco beat
