Not always all at once

Whitney Houston – All at once

#quotefromthe80s
All at once I'm drifting on a lonely sea
Holding on to memories
And it's hurt me more than you know
So much more than it shows
All at once

Even for the big stars there are times when a song reaches success with a little delay. Obviously it depends on commercial strategies, but also on other factors, and to some extent also on destiny. But this delay, however, is generally not enough to stop a great career, and indeed sometimes it is just a matter of waiting for the best moment.

And that’s a bit like what happened at the beginning of Whitney Houston’s career, who after a number of evenings singing in clubs around New York and New Jersey, was finally noticed by the big record labels. She had already taken part in some songs as a backing singer, for example for Chaka Khan in I’m Every Woman, but in 1983 the managers of Arista gave her the opportunity to work on an album of her own. It wasn’t easy to find a dozen songs suited to her voice and her talent, but after more than a year, Whitney Houston’s first songs came out, even if the album wasn’t ready yet.

The songs released in 1984, however, had only moderate success, but in the first months of 1985 Whitney Houston’s career reached the turning point. Meanwhile, just on Valentine’s Day, her first album finally came out, which was simply titled Whitney Houston. Then towards the end of March, Whitney’s first song was released and was destined to have great international success. It was as we said the fifth single released, but perhaps also thanks to the release of the album, the beautiful All At Once far exceeded the success of the previous singles. Actually this song only came out in several European countries and Japan, but it didn’t come out as a single in the United States. Yet, the echo of the success obtained in Europe went beyond the ocean, and American radios began to broadcast the song even if the single did not exist in that part of the world.

Attention: even in this case, however, the success was not immediate, but it was a wave that slowly grew and overwhelmed everything. We can say that perhaps the top of success was reached even a year later, in the period between 1986 and 1987, but it is a fact that after the release of this record other masterpieces were released that were equally decisive for Whitney’s career, such as Saving All My Love for You, How Will I Know and Greatest Love of All. The song, however, did not even have a real video: you could simply see Whitney on a stage singing dressed in white, a quite surreal video if we think that we are more or less in the same months of historical videos like Take on Me by a-ha, The Wild Boys by Duran Duran, or Material Girl by Madonna! Probably, Whitney’s great voice didn’t even need a real video!

In short, All At Once was likely the song that determined the turning point in the career of the greatest star of the second part of the 80s, a fragile woman with an incredible voice and talent, who from this moment became one of the absolute queens of the 80s, even though it actually took her some time and patience!
